I’m always looking for ways to improve the altar.. er, I mean, “bar” at Casa De Cash, and after hearing about the virtues of silicon ice cube trays (on Mr. Martini’s excellent ”Behind The Bar Show” Podcast), decided to track some down.
The advantages of silicon trays are numerous:
- They eliminate messy ice shards and cracked cubes.
- They don’t absorb odor or color the way conventional plastic trays can.
- The cubes pop out pefectly, as true cubes.
- They come in a variety of colors, perfect for adding a touch of style and class to your freezer
After doing some poking around Amazon and the like, I found some I liked.
Tovolo’s “Perfect Ice Cube Trays” were available in prices ranging from $9.99 to $11.99 for a set of two trays, each of which makes 15 cubes. The problem? Amazon wanted nearly $10 for shipping, essentially doubling the price. Fortunately, my local Bed Bath & Beyond happened to have some in stock for $9.99 and I decided to give them a try.
The first thing I noticed is the kewl, rubbery feel of the trays. I knew getting the cubes out would be no problem because of how flexible the silicon was. The next thing I noticed is that they truly were ‘perfect’ cubes. None of this rounded ice “cube” nonsense most of us have become accustomed to.
Now for the test. I put them in the freezer before going to bed, and the following night invited some close friends over for Blackjack practice and beverages.
The cubes were ideal. They had frozen rock solid, and were almost opaque with a very cool ‘frosted’ look. My friend Taggart actually referred to them as “Cocktail Art” and I’d say that was the perfect description.
I plan on getting more to completely eliminate my ‘regular’ ice cube trays in the near future. In my opinion, it’s now sacrilege to pour my precious Hangar One or Level over anything less. Well done Tovolo.
