If there’s one thing I love, it’s stumbling upon new, weeeeird items at Golden Triangle liquors (whose register seems to be my paychecks’ favorite hideout).

Imagine my delight then in seeing “Jim Beam and Cola” in the fridge there. Jim Beam has always been the perfect balance of tasty value + plenty strong whiskey. In short; it’s a bargain bourbon worthy of a drunken sherpa like myself. Add JB to a splash of Coke, and you’ve got one of my easy favorites, cocktail-wise.

Past attempts at ‘RTD’ (ready to drink) spirit + ‘cola’ mixtures have failed miserably for one reason; the ‘cola’ is some ungodly, sub-par RC cola concoction not fit for human consumption. See Captain Morgan’s “Tattoo” and pre-made Bacardi + Cola for example.

Jim Beam & Cola gets it right by incorporating a soft drink close enough to Coca-cola to avoid your gag-reflex.

It’s also a mere 5% by volume, making it an easy choice for slow, fall afternoon sipping.

Recommended.

A few months ago, Greg mentioned several benefits of using take home beer ‘growlers’ (1/2 gallon jugs of beer typically sold at smaller breweries, etc) as an alternative to buying at the liquor store.

Last night I found myself waiting for some friends while enjoying Rock Bottom Brewery’s Beer Of The Day (Falcon Pale Ale).  Every day of the week Rock Bottom offers up pints of a select brew for $3.  Not too bad.  On the wall however, I noticed the prices for growlers.

To buy one, it’s $9.49.  Refills are $7.49.  This is a better deal than I thought.  Here’s the math:

In what can only be called an answer to my prayers, Google has dropped a new application aimed at curbing those late night drunken emails that leave you cringing in the morning:

Google has adapted its free email service to help those letting loose after a few evening cocktails or succumbing to lovelorn moments from firing off messages they might regret in the morning. Mail Goggles software comes to life after dark and on weekends, when altered states of mind are more probable, and requires that five simple math problems be answered correctly in less than a minute in order to send a Gmail missive. “Sometimes I send messages I shouldn’t send,” Gmail engineer Jon Perlow wrote Monday in a website posting announcing the optional new feature. “Like the time I told that girl I had a crush on her over text message. Or the time I sent that late night email to my ex-girlfriend that we should get back together.”

This is perfect.  Now WHEN’s T-mobile gonna wise up and do the same thing for my texts???

Last week I was sent to El Paso on an impromptu business trip. 

One of the best things about business travel are the ‘travel days’ which often involve getting out of work early to make it to the airport… and the airport bar.

This trip was no exception and after getting dropped off at DIA I checked in and headed straight to the concourse.  This trip was a bit strange in that I didn’t know the people I was travelling with, but did know they were a few rungs above me on the corporate ladder, which meant I should exercise some caution before enjoying some beverages.

I had a basic description of one of the guys, and after scanning the place for anyone similar I deemed it safe to sit down.

Living downtown offers plenty of perks for the few, the proud, the drunkards. 

First off, home is never more than a soused stumble away at the end of the night.  Next we have the benefit of dozens of bars to choose from on a given night, as well as Denver’s finest liquor store, Argonaut, just minutes away. 

Finally, at least in Denver, we have one of the biggest perks of all, the “City Book”.  City Book is a coupon book that local businesses use to advertise.  It always contains plenty of buy one get one free drink coupons and the like.  In the past, I’d used a few of the coupons once in awhile, but realized I was missing out on some real savings by not making more of a concerted effort. 

Thus was born the idea of the Drunken Sherpa Coupon Crawl. (more…)

Last night I made the rounds in my old Capital Hill hood drinking, eating raw fish and soaking up the setting sun. 

The prior evening I got a hip tip from a waitress about a tasting that was being held the next day at Aqua.  She told me it would include free food AND booze and that the festivities would start at 5PM.

One of my big projects right now involves utilizing public transportation.  Once the south east light rail opens in 60 days (but who’s counting) I plan to ditch my car entirely.  Last night’s outing was no exception.  I had considered taking an actual BUS to my destination (which I haven’t rode, save to the airport, in approximately 15 years) but realized I could use the walk.  (more…)
